Word Chain.
One word opens the next.

Word Chain is a timed word-linking game. Start with any accepted word, then make each new word begin with the last letter of the previous one. Longer words score more, while valid words give you a little extra time.

01 / The essentials

How to play Word Chain.

  1. Begin with any dictionary word containing 3–30 letters. After that, start each word with the final letter of the previous word.
  2. Do not repeat a word within the same run. A word scores its length squared: a four-letter word earns 16 points and a five-letter word earns 25.
  3. The standard run starts with 80 seconds. Each accepted word adds 2 seconds, up to 90 bonus seconds in total. The clock keeps running if you switch tabs.

02 / Find your rhythm

A few ways to get started.

Think one ending ahead

Before submitting a long word, think of a word you could play from its last letter. Keeping the chain moving matters as well as scoring.

Keep a short word in reserve

A familiar short word can save a stalled chain. Do not spend all your time searching for the longest possible answer.

Remember what you have used

Repeated words are not accepted in the same run. Use the visible chain to help you find a different answer.

A few useful answers.

Can I reuse a word?

Not within the same run. Each accepted word must be new to that chain.

Why did the timer keep going in another tab?

Standard Word Chain uses elapsed time. Switching tabs does not pause a run. Start when you have a moment to play.
