Target is a timed arithmetic puzzle. Use all four given numbers exactly once, combine them with arithmetic operators and reach the target value. Each solved puzzle gives you a fresh, solvable set.

01 / The essentials

How to play Target.

  1. Use each of the four numbers exactly once. Choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and parentheses to build your calculation.
  2. Normal operator precedence applies. Fractions and negative intermediate values are allowed, but joining digits, powers and unary minus are not.
  3. Tap the number and operator buttons, then submit your answer. Each correct answer earns 50 points. A run lasts 90 seconds, and the clock continues if you switch tabs.

A few ways to get started.

Work backwards from the target

For 24, useful building blocks include 8 × 3 and 6 × 4. Look for a way to make one of those factors from the remaining numbers.

Use parentheses deliberately

Parentheses let you make a useful intermediate value before multiplying or dividing. Check that the calculation uses every number once.

Find a route, not the route

A challenge can have more than one valid answer. You only need one correct calculation that meets the rules.

Are the targets solvable?

Each standard Target challenge is generated with a valid solution. There can be more than one way to reach it.

Do I have to use all four numbers?

Yes. Each number must be used exactly once. Choosing a number twice or leaving one out does not meet the standard rules.
